COURSE AIM
This three-day course aims to provide an overview of the most common classification systems, assessment tests and scales used for children with Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disorders.
The course is focused on gross motor, fine motor and sensory assessment tools typically used in clinical practice and research.

COURSE FORMAT
This course is presented by two instructors and comprises lectures, video demonstrations, group work between the participants, practice with children and discussions.
The video demonstrations and practical sessions will provide a deep understanding and experience of the application and scoring of the main outcome measures.
Suitable clothes for the practical sessions are needed.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

The course participats will:

  1. Become familiar with a variety of assessment tools and classification systems for children with CP and other developmental disorders.
  2. Understand and become able to explain each assessment tool’s purpose & properties.
  3. Understand – through video demos and practice – the administration process of its tool.
  4. Become able to find, understand, critically appraise and use the appropriate tool in relation to patients’ needs.
  5. Understand how to relate a child’s functional activities and activity limitations to his/her participations restriction.
  6. Understand how to use the results of the assessment tools for setting appropriate, meaningful and realistic functional treatment goals.

Day One

  • Types of measure tools, definitions and basic principles.

10:30 – 11:00 Coffee break

11:00 – 12:30

  • Classification systems for cerebral palsy and other developmental disorders.
  • Gross and Fine motor function. The interplay between gross and fine motor functioning.
  • The definition of functioning according to ICF.
  • Outcome measures for CP children.

12:30 – 13:30 Break

13:30 – 15:00

  • Gross Motor Function Measure. Description and video demonstration. Practice between participants.

15:00 – 15:30  Coffee break

15:30 – 17:0

  • Gross Motor Function Measure. Practice with children.

Day Two 

9:00-10:30

  • Gross Motor Function Measure (GMFM). Scoring through videos from previous day.
  • Relation between GMFCS and GMFM Scores.

10:30 – 11:00  Coffee break

  • Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory (PEDI).  Description and discussion.

12:30 – 13:30  Break

13:30 – 15:00

  • Quality Upper Extremity Measure (QUEST). Description and video demonstration. Practice between participants.
  • Bruininks – Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT-2). Description and video demonstration. Practice between participants.

  • Quality Upper Extremity Measure (QUEST). Practice with children.
  • Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Proficiency (BOT-2). Practice with children.

 

Day Three

  • The Movement ABC-2. Description and video demonstration. Practice between participants.

10:30 – 11:00  Coffee break

11:00 – 12:30

  • Sensory skills assessments (Sensory Profile, Stereognosis test etc). Description and video demonstration. Practice between participants.

12:30 – 13:30  Break

13:30 – 15:00

  • Tests and Scales used for babies. Description and video demonstration.

15:00 – 15:30 Coffee break

15:30 – 17:00

  • Other assessment tools used.
  • Summary of the course.
  • Final remarks and discussion.

Each participant receives a script and a certificate in English.

INSTRUCTOR:

Styliani – Liana Milioti PT, PhD, NDT-Bobath EBTA Senior Tutor –

1977  Graduated from the Department of Physiotherapy of the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki Greece.

October 1992  I was awarded the title of Tutor/Coordinator Instructor on the Neuro-developmental / BOBATH Method, allowing me to teach NDT-Bobath courses worldwide.

September 2005  I was awarded from the European Bobath Tutors Association (EBTA) the title of Senior NDT-Bobath Tutor allowing me to train new NDT – Bobath Tutors worldwide.

2008 I was awarded the Ph.D. diploma from the University of Brunel at U.K. with the title «Long-term neuromotor outcome in full term infants with prolonged central sleep apnoeas». The PhD research study was conducted in the Department of Developmental Physiology of the Karl-Franzens University Graz Austria.

1977 till today  I have successfully attended more than 20 different post graduate courses for training in different methods & techniques related to physiotherapy assessment and treatment (e.g. Mackenzie, PNF, Sensory Integration, Conductive education, Craniosacral therapy, Myofasial release, Kinesio Taping, Motor control & Motor learning and others)

OCCUPATIONAL ACTIVITIES

1977 till today Forty-one years is the total time of occupational activities on the subject of “physiotherapy intervention in patients suffering from CNS damage and especially in children suffering from Cerebral Palsy and other developmental disorders”.

Approximately 30 years of teaching at the Physiotherapy Department of the Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki Greece as a Professor of Physiotherapy and 1 year at the European University of Cyprus.

1992 till today Training – specialization of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, speech therapy graduates and physicians in using the NDT- Bobath method internationally (Greece, Mexico, Argentina, Cyprus, Austria, Poland).
I was the leader Senior Tutor in more than 40 NDT-Bobath Basic courses, in more than 25 NDT-Bobath Baby courses and in more than 15 other courses related to Physiotherapy Assessment, Normal and Abnormal Human Movement, Typical and Atypical sensory motor Development, and other topics related to pediatric Neurorehabilitation.

1977 till today I have participated as invited lecturer in over 50 National and International congresses and symposia.
I have presented more than 20 Posters in National and International congresses and symposia. I have published three research papers having approximately 95 citations.

SOCIAL ACTIVITIES:

Since 1992 Member of the American NDT – Bobath Association (NDTA).
Since 1992 Member of the European NDT – Bobath Tutors Association (EBTA).
1994 – 1996 President of the Greek NDT – Bobath Association
2006 – 2010 Member of the Executive Committee of the European NDT-Bobath Tutors Association.
